Home to Congo Square, Louis Armstrong Memorial Park is not only a landmark dedicated to a New Orleans legend, but it’s also a commemoration of African-American slaves and the music that arose out of a forced migration. Centuries ago now, Congo Square was the place where slaves and free African-Americans gathered to play music, sell goods, and simply get together. Before the term jazz was even coined, African-Americans were already spreading the seeds of the music that would become jazz, rhythm, and blues right here, in this park. The park also holds a rich cultural program of entertainment and events for both adults and children.
